Carpenter Ants in Connecticut

Like Termites, Carpenter Ants are social insects.  Colonies consist of a Queen and various worker castes or sizes each of which performs a function for the colony.  Unlike Termites however, Carpenter Ants do not consume wood.  Damage from Carpenter Ants results when a colony excavates galleries in wood for nesting.  Most frequently this is done in areas of high moisture where the wood may already be compromised by rot decay.  Leaky roofs (especially flat roofs) and around windows and doors where moisture has entered are prime Carpenter Ant spots.

The largest or "Major" workers do most of the colony's food foraging.  These are the "big black ants" we may see in the kitchen or trailing around the outside of the house.
